Clinical study: Lower back pain and sleep disorders are reduced by massage therapy.
Research:
In this study, massage therapy was compared to relaxation therapy in patients with chronic lower back pain. Among other things, the reduction of pain, depression, anxiety and sleep disorders, the improvement of trunk mobility (ROM) and possible effects on absenteeism and productivity were evaluated.
A total of 30 adults who had been suffering from back pain for at least six months took part. On the first and last day of the five-week study, the participants completed questionnaires and were assessed with regard to their level of physical activity.
Results:
At the end of the study, the massage therapy group showed a better result than the relaxation group:
- Significantly less pain
- Lower values for depression and anxiety
- Fewer sleep disorders
- Improved trunk mobility and flexion
