Clinical study: Therapeutic massage in older people: Research questions.

Research:
With the increasing recognition of the importance of holistic approaches to care, therapeutic massage is experiencing a new appreciation. Massage supports health and healing by promoting relaxation and is considered a safe, caring and cost-effective intervention.

Research on therapeutic massage in older people has considered theoretical framework, study design, variables, subjects, methods, measurement tools, analysis and outcomes. For future studies, it is crucial that caregivers use clear definitions and standardized procedures - e.g. type of massage, body regions treated and duration of treatment. In addition, variables that have a significant impact on health, such as agitation, immune status or pain, should be investigated.

Results:
A total of nine clinical studies were reviewed, including six placebo-controlled studies. Six of these studies showed significant effects of therapeutic massage, including:

  • Reduction of systolic blood pressure and pulse rate
  • Reduction of the heart rate
  • Increase in skin temperature (especially in men)
  • More relaxation and well-being
